GCS is a structural engineering consultancy based in Sheffield.
In addition to Sheffield, we also cover the local surrounding areas which include Chesterfield, Derbyshire and Yorkshire. Over the years, we have also developed a client base nationwide across the UK to include Shropshire, West Midlands, Lincolnshire, North East Lincolnshire, Merseyside, South Wales and Dorset.
GCS works closely with clients, architects and contractors to provide innovative and economical structural design solutions for all types of building projects, from refurbishment and conversion schemes to new-builds. We also offer infrastructure design such as bridges and retaining walls.
Our team has a wealth of experience in structural design and analysis. With the support of an appropriate computer analysis programme and hand calculations, we can provide optimal designs to suit both conventional and inventive construction methods.
Our engineers are fluent in the latest modelling software such as SCIA Engineer, TEKLA Structural Designer, etc.

Our Specialisms
Structural design of new buildings
We are experienced in structural design for residential, commercial, light and heavy industrial buildings, with the use of traditional building materials such as steel, concrete, masonry and timber. All designs comply with current building regulations, latest British Standards and EuroCodes.
Refurbishment of existing & listed buildings
If you are planning to refurbish an existing building, whether it is listed or not we will be able to offer our advice on the suitability for conversion and on the structural alteration. If the conversion is not structural related, we have contacts with local planning consultants, Surveyors and Architects who can assist you with moving your project forward.
Foundation Design
We have wide range of experiences in dealing with different ground conditions and are able to offer foundation design ranging from traditional trenches, reinforced strip, pads and rafts, to suspended reinforced concrete ground beams and piles caps.
Structural inspection, assessment and analysis
Our extensive experience in structural inspections allows us to provide you with a comprehensive inspection report to capture the condition of the structure.
We also offer structural assessment and analysis services to existing structures to ensure they are suitable for purpose.
If any defects are found during the structural inspection or assessment, we would provide recommendations on the methods to strengthen the structure.
Approval in Principle (AiP) for highway/local highway structures
We are experienced in preparing AiPs and liaising with local authorities to obtain necessary approvals.
Highway structures design and assessment
Our design team has experience in highway structures and assessments such as signposting foundations, gantry foundations, retaining walls and bridges.
Highway structures inspection
We offer highway structures inspections in accordance with CS450 “Inspection of highway structures” (formerly BD 63/17).
Drawings, Building Information Modelling (BIM), Revit & RC Detailing
We offer structural drawings and modelling services for planning, building control submission and for construction purposes.

Structural Inspection & Assessment
Should you have any doubt about the integrity of a structure, we will be able to offer our assistance. Our structural engineers specialise in carrying out non-intrusive structural inspections to verify the condition of the structure.
If a structural assessment is required to determine the safety of an existing structure, our experienced engineers are competent to carry out structural assessments for a wide range of structures and building materials.
